Description

We were very fortunate to acquire a collection of ceramic works by celebrated UK artist David Garland.  This is tall and wide and makes a statement as a functional or decorative piece. We especially love the raised detail on the sides, the subtle green splatter pattern, and, of course, the prominent feet!

About the Artist

Born in England in 1941, David Garland grew up in New Zealand. In 1961 he returned and trained at the London College of Printing. Later, he taught there, and at the Bath Academy of Art, Corsham, as a senior lecturer. During that period he was also a working artist and had his first one-man exhibition of paintings at the Drian Galleries in 1963. He began exploring ceramics as a medium after he took lessons from the potter Jonathan Atkinson in 1972 and established a small pottery in Oxford. In 1975 he moved with his family to the Gloucestershire Cotswolds and built studios that could accommodate both his painting and pottery output.  For the most part, his ceramics tend to marry the two art forms. He is very much active today creating what he refers to as slipware with either "painting", "drawing", "sgraffito" or other painterly decoration over a typically white ground.

He has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows in the UK, the US, Australia, India and Japan and his works are in the collections of institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Crafts Council, and the Paisley Museum and Art Gallery.
