Description

This is probably one of our most unusual -- and visually mesmerizing -- works. From the beginning of his career, Martin Weinstein experimented with the use of layers.  It began during his childhood creating toy paper theaters and extended to his early artistic period when, like most artists, his subject matter was mostly abstract. His great leap forward came when he returned to his early fascination with the works of J.M.W. Turner and applied his layering techniques to landscape. And here is where it gets really interesting. By breaking his compositions down to three or four floating layers of acrylic (almost like animation cells), he creates a compilation of painted surfaces that expresses changes in space and time.  For the viewer, the effect is beguiling.  There is real depth to his paintings. Yes, those flowers really do look like they are floating!

About the Artist

Martin Weinstein was born in 1952 and grew up in Westchester County, NY.  His father was himself an artist who had studied with Roualt in Paris. After initial studies with his father, Martin went on to study formally at the Tyler School of Art, graduating with a BFA in 1974. Martin was initially an abstract painter; but beginning in the 2000s, he increasingly depicted flowers and landscapes, often of his wife in her garden.

Weinstein has shown his work in over 30 solo museum exhibitions nationally, and at Franklin Reihlman Fine Art, New York; Walter Wickiser Gallery, New York; Allen Gallery, New York; MacNider Art Museum, Mason City, IA; Visual Arts Center, Sioux Falls, SD; and the Fernbank Museum of Natural History, Atlanta GA. Two recent solo shows, Platonia and Moment to Moment traveled throughout the US, making stops in NYC, Chicago and Nashville. His work has been reviewed extensively and is in the collection of many private collections, including that of Chase Manhattan Bank.
